Nestled in the foothills of the Italian Alps, in Northern Italy’s lies Damanhur and the Temples of Humankind. Named after the ancient Egyptian city of Damanhur that had been dedicated to Horus ( the Egyptian god of the sky, war and kingship), the Italian community of Damanhur is best known for its treasure trove of resplendent, one-of-a-kind artworks buried deep in the heart of the mountain – The Temples of the Humankind, dubbed by many as the eighth wonder of the world.
Damanhur boasts a colossal, multi-level subterranean architectural masterpiece brimming with magnificent, eye-arresting works of art that celebrate the divine nature of mankind and which are simply beyond compare. The architectural value and artistic beauty of the Temples of Humankind, a collective work of art masterfully created with painstaking efforts, are as undeniable as they are grandiose and awe-inspiring.
Linked by brilliantly decorated tunnels or corridors, impeccably adorned with an eclectic mix of visionary, color-rich and alluring artworks, monumental temples built 100 feet underground on five levels and spanning a whopping 300,000 cubic feet, artfully narrate the history of humanity across multiple planes of existence.
What is now a thriving small city of 600 people, Damanhur had humble and secret beginnings, a self sustained community living in harmony with nature and the elements around them. Damanhur has become so much more than just a vision of artistic and spiritual expression but birthed a new way of life that, for its inhabitants, bridges the gap between humanity and nature. Seasonally inviting tourists looking to experience a mind opening trip, and culturally enriching way of life as belief systems from all over the world are celebrated.
Entering the ‘Temples of Humankind’ and you begin your journey in The Hall of Earth. Two circular rooms dedicated to Mother Nature and our planet. These rooms create the shape of the infinity sign. The use of color and imagery bring together the spiritual dreams and visions of nature and earth brought together in perfect harmony as the fitting tribute to Mother Nature and to our beautiful planet.
As you enter The Hall of Metals, you are greeted by a circular room dedicated to all of the metals of time. As you gaze in that perfect circle you will see 8 precious glass windows, decorated with Damanhourian symbols and 4 Tiffany glass doors. Every room you pass through has the weight of centuries of a spiritual journey imprinted on each artistic expression. As you step into the Labyrinth you see a vast hall that is dedicated to the union and harmony of all the divine forces of our planet. 35 windows open you up to walk the entire spiritual journey of humanity.
Beyond the Labyrinth you enter the heart of the Temple of Humanity. The Hall of Spheres. This room is filled with paintings, sculptures, and as you continue your journey, you are greeted by 9 spheres, each with alchemic liquids of different colors .
Your last stop is the Hall of Mirrors. It brings your journey in The Temple of Humanity to a close. It is centered on diffusely reflected light coming in from the Tiffany glass dome.
Words fail to bring true expression to the endless and unmistakable talent that each artist shared during the Damanhur’s birth. One thing we know for sure, it is a beautiful bridge connecting humanity to it’s spiritual roots and one we know will stand the test of time.
