Artist of the Week presents:
Karel Witt has dedicated his life to unveiling truths in social groups and his environment. He brings forth conscious social storytelling through surrealistic retro mixed media collage, creating a vibrant picture with loud messages hiding between layers. His work invites dialogue and an opportunity to check in with one’s values in life.
What are you currently focusing on? “I’m entirely focused on my diptych/hon starring diddy moon and sunglasses. “
Have you experienced any significant changes in your work this last year? “Only a shy return to my surrealistic roots. “
Where are you from, and how has that influenced your art? “Born in Ostrava, Moravia former Czechoslovakia (Czech Republic) The influence might be proportionally equal to the number of years spent in Moravia (15) years versus 57 as an Expat.”
Influenced by the catch-22-like (no-win situation) paradigm of diasporic Jewishness, WITTbeat assumes that conspirational, perpetual & mostly lethal oppression versus mainstream incompatibility, waywardness, independent or defying attitudes, remains an implicit feature of most Power structures.
The presumption that worldly institutions do get away with crimes of historical dimensions (as witnessed in the clergy’s conditioning of European Christian societies to a sustainable Antijudaism(-Semitism) coupled with self-esteem declining hostilities towards Jewry but
simultaneously never losing their aura of righteousness), is yet to be proven wrong.
Although celebrating the “Nonsense” approach of the subversive WW1 Dada Art Movement, WITTbeat itself recognizes the Movement’s binding & limitation to a pre-Shoah area.
Due to reality’s exterminating quality as witnessed in the 1930-ies & 40-ies, WITTbeat exercises a reserved & cautious approach with the only subtle indication of dada-like (sky cutting & fate dodging) elements.
The perception-exceeding number of victims makes any other than personalized (but still anonymous) reflection seem inappropriate & lends WITTbeat a sense of sadness.
Nevertheless, dada’s all-time inspiration & a feeling of intimate affinity prevails & the ultimate dadaising of dada into DEONADA remains WITTbeat’s never-ending challenge.”
