“Painting is my heartbeat… my symphony.

It is the rhythm in my step and the music in my eyes.”

“Without art… I am nothing.” – Sydnei SmithJordan

WAS THERE A PIVOTAL MOMENT WHEN YOU DECIDED TO FOLLOW YOUR PATH AS AN ARTIST?

I have always had a love for art. My mother is an artist. I wanted to be a surgeon, but when I discovered that I could not bear the smell of blood, my interests moved to medical illustration. From there to various fields of art.”

CAN YOU DESCRIBE YOUR WORK FOR US?

“My work is categorized as pop fusion. This style is a dance of graphic design, abstraction, and collage meshed with traditional mediums. My palette is void of color or painted with muted tones other than the focal points.”

WHAT DOES YOUR WORK AIM TO SAY?

“I strive to educate and bring awareness of various subject matters in my work. Currently, I am working as a visual historian. I have created such series with African American Women in History, Harriet Tubman, Negro Leagues, Veterans Series, and now Women in Baseball.”

HOW DO YOU THINK YOUR WORK FITS WITHIN SOCIETY IN OUR PRESENT TIMES?

“My work fits within the current society with the sense that one must know the past to go forward in the future. These history series teach us the power of the past and give us hope for the future.”

WHO ARE YOUR BIGGEST INFLUENCES?

“DuChamp, Esher, Dali, Charles White, Kadir Nelson, and Kevin Williams “WAK.”

WHAT VISUAL REFERENCES DO YOU DRAW UPON IN YOUR WORK?

“I research before I paint, usually through google, library books, or museum visits. I also study people. I go to different places and watch people. I study how they move, their facial expressions, and their emotions.”

CAN YOU TELL US ABOUT YOUR CREATIVE PROCESS?
“I paint in muted colors and use pops of color to draw emotion to the piece. I use oil primarily. Some pieces are metal, glass, wood, fabric, or collage. I do whatever feels right to get my message across.”

ANY UPCOMING PROJECTS?
“Thrown like a girl” Cape May MAC. Jan 13th- March 26th, 2023.

“Heroes” Wildwood Naval Air Station Museum.
