Artist Vladimir Volegov has been creating art since he was a school child growing up in the city of Khabarovsk, Russia in the 1960s. He claims to have started painting at three years old, and after finishing school, Volegov was admitted to the prestigious ‘Privoj Rog’ school of art. After a brief stint in the army, Volegov was admitted to the Lvov Polygraphic Institute, located in what is now Ukraine.

Volegov’s early jobs as a struggling young artist were designing cassette covers, movie posters, and other types of commercial art. Beginning in 1984, Volegov began entering local poster art contests. He met with huge success here, winning many competitions with his posters. On the back of this success, Volegov moved to Moscow, where he hoped to hit the big time with his commercial artwork.

This move paid off, and Volegov was hugely successful in the Moscow commercial artist scene. Several reputable publishing houses sought him out and commissioned works for album covers and movie posters.

In 1990, Volegov decided to commit himself entirely to true art, and left the world of commercial art behind him, to travel around Europe making a living as a street artist by painting portraits of travelers. He painted his way through Spain, Germany, and Austria, ever perfecting the striking techniques that he uses today.

We were lucky enough to sit down with Vladimir Volegov recently for an exclusive interview, covering all things art, from his humble origins in Russia, and the family that raised him, to his early days designing movie posters, to the things and people that inspire and influence him now, and we even talk about what he hopes that people might take away from his art.
