A Forest Born of Reinvention

Deep blue folds curl into one another, with slender extensions reaching beyond a clustered body. Star Smart’s Slither seems poised to unfurl. Its sculptural presence invites an imaginative encounter with something that feels organic, unfamiliar, and quietly alive.

Working from her studio in Cincinnati, Star is an abstract artist and material innovator whose practice explores transformation, memory, and legacy. Her inspiration reaches from fungi and cellular structures to the experiences of her own life. Through hand and heat manipulation, fiber takes on folds, openings, and textures that reward a patient, curious eye.

The Heteromorphic Forest

Star imagines a place where her invented forms can grow: the Heteromorphic Forest. Inspired by flowers, mushrooms, molds, and the life that creeps through a forest, this imagined world feels organic while being formed from recycled materials. The idea gives her experiments a setting in which unfamiliar structures can belong.

In Slither, the rich blue surface gathers into rounded cavities and curling edges. Elsewhere, vivid greens, turquoise, yellow, purple, and red animate an intricate fiber relief. The changing scale of its openings and raised forms suggests a landscape that can be explored through color and texture.

The two-sided Affliction offers a different rhythm. Repeated panels carry earthy tones, irregular edges, and pale markings. Seen together, these variations can feel like a collection of traces: individual fragments held within a larger arrangement.

A Life Continually Reimagined

Star’s formative years in the 1970s were spent in a nomadic life with her parents, nurturing a connection with the Earth and an awareness of life at different scales. Emancipation as a teenager in the 1980s, counterculture, and later formal fine art education shaped a path of independence and experimentation. Motherhood and love brought further dimensions to her creative life.

Having exhibited domestically and internationally, Star continues to develop her sculptural language while crafting her memoirs. Reinvention and an investigation of her past remain central to her practice. Her imagined forest gives that personal inquiry a generous outward form—a world in which material, memory, and the possibility of growth meet.
