Stand before Helene Steene’s YELLOW PORTES and the surface begins to reveal its many tempos. Strong arches and upright panels establish a measured structure. Within them, yellow glows against pale blue, while cream-colored passages carry the irregular textures of a weathered wall. Smooth metal catches the eye among these layered marks, bringing a different kind of light to the composition.

Surfaces that hold our attention

Helene combines classical oil-glaze techniques with natural minerals, marble dust and contemporary brushed metal. Her work has a material depth that rewards proximity. Color can feel luminous and expansive, while sand, wood and textured layers give the painting a tangible presence. The relationship between these qualities allows a carefully balanced composition to remain alive with variation.

Both YELLOW PORTES and PORTES FRESCO III measure 48 × 42 × 2 inches and bring oil glazes, acrylic, marble dust, sand, metal and wood together on wood. In PORTES FRESCO III, turquoise surrounds paired architectural forms. Pale arcs, metallic shapes and warm orange passages create a distinctive rhythm across the surface. Each painting offers a different encounter with geometry, light and traces of wear.

The lasting presence of Paros

The Greek island of Paros has been an important source of inspiration for Helene. Its soft white walls, weathered wood, changing sea and sense of layered history inform her visual world. The island’s translucent marble also inspired her experiments with marble dust and contemporary fresco-like surfaces. These influences help explain the meeting of clear structure and richly worked texture in her paintings.

Her work has been exhibited and collected internationally, with solo museum exhibitions at the Taubman Museum of Art and the Headley-Whitney Museum. Her practice also extends into large-scale commissions and public spaces, including the light installation Moon Sentinel. Across these different settings, her attention to light and a viewer’s experience remains a meaningful thread.

Helene speaks of a search for inner beauty, depth and simplicity, even within complex forms. She hopes a painting can offer someone a moment of focus and reflection. Looking closely at these two works, that invitation feels tangible: our eyes settle into their structure, then follow the small shifts of texture and color that make the surface quietly compelling.
