A figure stretches through a deep blue field, the body traced in flickering lines of gold, pale blue and red. One arm reaches outward as the torso lifts, giving the movement a sense of release. In Marina Gavanski Zissis’s Blue Diver (Body of Light), the figure seems to emerge from the surrounding color. The painting holds the instant when a body becomes a gesture, and the gesture becomes a feeling.
A dialogue carried through the figure
Marina’s creative process grows through an exploratory exchange with her models. She describes the connection as “telepathy,” a dialogue in which a pose can carry echoes of the past while evolving in the present. Proportion, harmony and grace guide her attention, and empathy shapes her approach to the feminine and the implied feminine within her work.
Modern Odalisque offers a quieter encounter. A reclining woman turns her gaze beyond the edge of the canvas, her long hair falling into a green setting threaded with pink, yellow and blue. The wide composition gives the body room to rest. Its softly modeled forms meet the surrounding marks and colors, creating a space that feels suspended between an observed pose and a private, imagined world.
In Adonis and Venus (Love turns Life), two bodies curve around a circular field. Red, violet and blue passages move between the figures, joining their separate positions within one continuous rhythm. Their closeness carries the tension Marina explores in paintings of lovers: the pull of fusion and separation, and the complexity of remaining in another person’s orbit.
The personal presence of painting
Marina’s Traveling, Spiral and Love series explore personal movement through time, including figures facing an unknown future with hope. Her Serbian heritage forms an important part of her identity, while the human body gives her a way to approach individual experience within a wider shared world.
For Marina, painting in person preserves the particularity of an encounter. A model changes with time, yet a painting can hold one moment open. The nude figure brings a sense of continuity to that exploration, allowing vulnerability and strength to appear through a posture, a turn of the head or the reach of an arm.
These three works give those ideas distinct forms: repose in Modern Odalisque, entwined movement in Adonis and Venus, and an almost weightless passage through Blue Diver. Marina allows each body to carry more than its visible outline. The paintings invite us to stay with a moment of transition, where the person we see and the feeling we recognize meet in color and light.
