A Human Presence in the Darkness

In Exit, a solitary figure bends forward, its pale contours emerging from a vast, dark field. The bowed head and folded limbs draw the eye inward, toward a human presence that feels exposed and deeply private. Dragan Marković Markus gives this quiet encounter a powerful physical form: a body, a surrounding silence, and space for us to look more closely.

A Serbian painter based in Šabac, Dragan explores the human figure and its psychological and existential relationship with contemporary space and time. His expressive visual language asks us to consider identity, meaning, alienation, and the fragile nature of human existence.

The Distance Between a Figure and an Exit

Painted in acrylic on canvas and measuring 180 × 120 cm, Exit places its pale figure against charcoal darkness. Blue-gray planes extend beneath and beside the body. The visible brushwork gives the shoulders, arms, and bent knee a tactile immediacy, drawing us close to the figure even as the surrounding space feels immense.

High above, the word “EXIT” appears in pale lettering. The distance between that word and the bowed figure creates a tension that remains open to interpretation. An exit might be physical, emotional, or imagined; the painting leaves room for each reading. The inward posture can suggest weariness or self-protection, making the encounter intimate while its questions reach beyond the individual.

A Space for Recognition

Dragan holds BA and MA degrees in Painting from the Academy of Arts in Novi Sad and a doctorate in Painting from Belgrade. Over several decades, his work has appeared in national and international exhibitions, biennials, and art publications, receiving awards and recognition both nationally and internationally.

The emotional force of Exit comes from the attention it asks us to give another human being. We linger with the gesture, the light on the body, and the unanswered word above. In that sustained act of looking, Dragan creates space for empathy—for recognizing something of our own uncertainty in another’s presence, and for meeting that vulnerability with care.
