At the Edge of Recognition

Three birdlike forms rise against a blue ground, their dark outlines enclosing a restless world of cream, bronze, yellow, and flickering color. In Josef Weidner’s The New Mutants, recognition arrives in fragments: a beak, an eye, the suggestion of a body. Then the painted surface draws us elsewhere, into shapes that feel suspended between creature and dream.

This invitation to keep looking lies at the heart of Josef’s art. Bringing abstract and surreal elements together, he creates images in which movement, emotion, and depth remain open to discovery. The familiar provides a doorway; imagination carries us through it.

A Language Drawn from Within

Nature, poetry, the subconscious, and the surrounding world nourish Josef’s creative vision. These sources meet in a practice that joins precise technique with artistic freedom, allowing structure and expressive energy to share the same space.

In The New Mutants, that relationship is visible in the contrast between strongly defined silhouettes and the intricate passages within them. Pale circles float across richly worked forms. Scraped-looking lines and overlapping colors give the bodies an almost geological complexity. The quiet blue surrounding them makes their unusual presence feel even more vivid.

The Freedom to Find Your Own Story

Created in 2017, the acrylic painting measures 90 by 90 centimeters. Its concentrated world rewards an intimate encounter: from a distance, the figures hold the composition; closer viewing reveals a shifting vocabulary of marks and color.

Josef welcomes individual interpretation, leaving room for viewers to discover perspectives that belong to their own experience. One person may sense transformation; another may be drawn to the tension between stillness and activity. The painting’s openness gives those responses space to coexist.

For art lovers and collectors, this is the pleasure of living with a work that continues to unfold. Josef Weidner gives imagination a tangible surface, inviting us to return with fresh eyes and let the extraordinary emerge from what we thought we recognized.
