Gene Sellers: Photographs at the Edge of a Story

Under the cold light of a nighttime shelter, a woman in a sweeping gold skirt stands among figures dressed for an entirely different moment. Rain-darkened glass closes the scene behind them, while reflections stretch across the pavement. In Gene Sellers’s Stranded Under Midnight’s Weight, the encounter feels both immediate and unexplained. We arrive in the middle of a story whose beginning and ending remain beyond the frame.

The space between seeing and knowing

Gene approaches photography as visual storytelling, drawing mystery and a quiet sense of foreboding into his images. The tension comes from what we can see clearly and what we cannot resolve. A face, a body or an expanse of empty space can become the center of a question that stays with us long after the first look.

In The Veil, bright blue eyes meet the viewer through folds of deep magenta fabric. The close framing makes the encounter intimate, yet the covering preserves distance. Color directs our attention to the gaze, leaving expression to carry the emotional weight. The photograph holds openness and concealment within the same small space.

The Promise opens onto a much wider setting. A woman in a white dress turns toward dark blue water and a low, distant island. The fabric sweeps outward across the foreground, its brightness set against sea and sky. Her turned back allows us to share the direction of her attention without knowing what she is waiting for. The scene offers room for longing, anticipation or an unfinished farewell.

A life of looking beyond the familiar

An award-winning photographic artist, Gene has traveled and photographed extensively across five continents. Among his honors is recognition as one of the Top 60 Contemporary Artists at an awards ceremony in Ferrara, Italy. He lives in the rugged Texas Hill Country with his wife of more than fifty years and their rescue dog, affectionately called “the unruly beast.”

The three works are presented as dye sublimation prints on metal, with Stranded Under Midnight’s Weight identified as a composite photograph. Their distinct scales give each encounter a different physical presence, from the close gaze of The Veil to the expansive nighttime tableau.

Gene’s images make uncertainty a place to linger. They leave enough of the story open for our own memories to enter: a departure, an unanswered look, the strange loneliness of standing among other people. Looking becomes a quiet act of participation, and the photograph continues beyond its edges.
