Three figures sit together beneath leafy trees, their faces opening into laughter. Blue and red garments catch strokes of pale light, while flowers and foliage surround the encounter. In Grady T Zeeman’s Holy Laughter, joy travels through the whole painting. The closeness of the figures makes the moment feel generous, as though there is room for us to share it.

Color that carries a gesture

A South African contemporary painter, Grady brings a lively handling of oil paint to the human figure. Across these three canvases, color passes between people and their surroundings, connecting a face to a garment, a gesture to the wider rhythm of the scene. The painted surface stays active, with warm and cool passages giving familiar actions a vivid emotional presence.

Sacred Movement places three figures in motion against a golden setting. Extended arms, lifted fabric and the broad sweep of a pale skirt lead the eye around the composition. Branching trees echo the movement at the edges. The scene holds the energy of a dance within a single suspended moment, allowing us to feel the rhythm through the arrangement of bodies and color.

Wise Women of Worth settles into a quieter exchange. Three women gather beside a small fire in a snowy mountain landscape. The central figure gestures as the others attend to her, and richly patterned garments bring warmth into the cool surroundings. The painting gives conversation a physical shape: hands, faces and the circle around the fire become points of connection.

A practice shaped by experience and community

Grady graduated in Fashion Design from Cape Technicon in 1988 and worked as a designer in Cape Town before committing fully to painting. Over decades of practice, she has refined her oil technique while pursuing studies in art history, exhibition curation and the professional life of the art world.

Her international exhibition journey began with a group show in India in 2008. Participation in the Florence and London biennales, followed by her debut solo exhibition in Rome in October 2020, forms part of a career extending across South Africa, the United States, the United Kingdom, Europe and Asia. ArtTour International named her a Top Artist to Watch in 2018 and 2024, and she became a VAA Art100 International Winner in 2025.

From 2011 to 2017, Grady directed Kunstehuijs Art Gallery, supporting fellow South African artists alongside her own work. She also serves on the board of Cape Town’s Association for Visual Arts. That commitment to artistic community finds a fitting companion in paintings where people meet through laughter, movement and attentive listening. Each scene offers a different way of being together, brought close by the warmth of the painted encounter.
