Large circles seem to drift forward while smaller ones gather into repeating sequences. Red moves into orange, green meets blue, and the same colors reappear inside shapes that appear to float over the surface. Karin Monschauer’s Espansione Quantica holds the eye in motion. Look at one circle, then at the field around it, and the relationship between the two begins to shift. The pleasure lies in following that change.
From the stitch to the digital image
Karin’s interest in mathematics and figurative composition began to connect with art during her high school years. A self-taught artist, she explored a wide range of materials, with embroidery remaining her favorite technique. The careful placement of cross-stitches gave her a way to build rigorous geometries and bring warm and cool colors into close conversation.
In 2015, Karin devoted herself fully to her artistic career. Her practice developed through a meeting of traditional embroidery and digital technology, with abstraction and optical art becoming central to her research. She names Kazimir Malevich, Wassily Kandinsky, Piet Mondrian and Sol LeWitt among her influences. Their interest in geometric form finds a personal continuation in her exploration of repetition, color and infinity.
There is a close connection between the patience of a stitch and the precision of these digital compositions. Each small decision affects the whole. In Espansione Quantica, a digital work from 2026, circles of different sizes repeat across a square field. Their changing scale creates a sense of expansion, while the shifting colors make it difficult to settle on a single foreground. Our attention keeps moving, discovering another relationship with each return.
Finding stillness within movement
Orizzonte in Onde Sonore, also from 2026, creates a different rhythm. Narrow vertical strips pass through soft horizontal bands of yellow, turquoise and deeper blue. The result suggests a pulse moving across the image. The title introduces the idea of sound, while the visible pattern gives that idea a quiet, measured presence.
In La Fame del Vuoto, from 2025, diagonal passages meet near the center of the composition. Stepped edges repeat into the surrounding color, creating the impression of forms advancing and receding. A bright diagonal holds the eye as the darker blue area opens around it. Karin makes a square surface feel full of changing depth.
Infinity is a recurring theme in Karin’s work, connected to her wish to evoke serenity, happiness and tranquility. These three compositions give that intention a visible form. Repetition creates continuity; changes in scale and color keep it alive. Spending time with them becomes an invitation to notice how a carefully placed shape can alter our perception of the space around it.
