RM Opens His Private Art Collection to the Public at SFMOMA

A private collection can tell a story that a museum collection alone cannot. On October 3, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art opened RM x SFMOMA: Between You and Me, the first museum exhibition devoted to works from the personal collection of RM, the musician and BTS leader who has become an influential collector of Korean and international art.

The exhibition brings together nearly 200 works from RM and SFMOMA, with nearly 150 drawn from RM’s collection. On view through February 7, 2027, it includes Korean modern and contemporary art alongside international works and objects spanning centuries and disciplines.

A Collector Steps Into the Curatorial Conversation

RM is not simply lending works. He co-curated the exhibition with SFMOMA curators América Castillo and Hyoeun Kim, shaping an installation built around personal connections between artworks rather than a conventional chronological survey. According to SFMOMA, RM also contributed wall texts and labels, giving visitors access to the thinking behind his collecting.

That approach matters because the exhibition places a nontraditional curatorial voice inside a major museum while giving substantial space to Korean art. SFMOMA describes the presentation as one of the largest exhibitions of Korean modern and contemporary art assembled in the United States.

What This Means for Artists

For artists, the exhibition is a reminder that cultural visibility can travel through unexpected networks. Collectors do more than acquire work: they can connect artists, institutions, audiences and histories that might otherwise remain separated. When a collector brings a deeply personal point of view into a museum, the result can also challenge established ways of organizing and interpreting art.

The exhibition arrives with RM’s enormous global audience attached to it, potentially introducing museum visitors to artists and art histories they may not have encountered through traditional channels. That crossover between popular culture and museum culture is worth watching—not because celebrity replaces scholarship, but because new entry points can widen who feels invited into the conversation around art.

RM x SFMOMA: Between You and Me is on view at SFMOMA from October 3, 2026, through February 7, 2027.
