About the Artist
Born in Buffalo New York in a racially prejudiced era, Leroi used art as a means to assuage his daily struggles in fitting into society. His work is touched by his training in commercial art and almost 30-year collection of sophisticated African art. Leroi’s early works were a vivid recollection of his life. Later on, he delved into abstraction as a representation of human experience and life in general.
Each painting succeeds in fusing geometrical abstractions with his life experiences and African thematics. Throughout his pieces, there is a cultured expression of freedom and yearning and an active link to his African heritage. Using acrylic and oil on canvases, he creates his two-dimensional version of historical incidences and imaginative worlds hoping to form a bridge to a world that he pleads for understanding. Leroi is a natural master of color and pattern, managing to keep his hues in line with the message he wishes to convey. He skilfully manages an almost impossible balance between tradition and contemporary art.
