R. Geoffrey Blackburn has been passionate about art all his life. His impressive works of art invite viewers on a journey of discovery to experience the majestic landscapes he paints. Although Blackburn studied art at the University of Utah, he is self-taught. He achieved recognition for his art at a young age; his work won first prize at the annual exhibit at the world-famous Old Mission at San Juan Capistrano, California, when he was only eight. He also studied the work of Renaissance Masters in Europe and was the principal artist for an international magazine in England during the early 1970s. In 1987, he invented a new art form he calls “Multi-Dimensionalism,” and was granted a patent for this user-interactive invention by the U. S. Patent Office in 1990.
Blackburn’s artwork has been featured in many prominent places, including the White House and national television. He has also won numerous awards and published in several books and magazines. Furthermore, his work has even appeared in a video on its way to the moon!

His paintings are primarily landscape based, with vibrant colors and glazes inspired by natural environments. From muted, natural tones to dramatic and intense hues, Blackburn’s paintings are a mesmerizing feast of color. He often includes intricate details in his work, such as tree branches, flowers, animals, and even mountains, to add depth to the painting. These details give his pieces an added dimension of realism and intrigue.
R. Geoffrey Blackburn’s creative process is one of enchantment and wonder. His paintings transport viewers to distant places, offering a chance to experience the majestic landscapes he captures on canvas.
The detail and depth in his work are astonishing; Blackburn uses little paint but glazes thin, transparent colors on top of each other to create the desired effect. This technique gives the illusion of three-dimensional space on a two-dimensional surface, allowing viewers to feel as if standing in the middle of the landscape, surrounded by its beauty.
Blackburn also paints scenes to convey their memories of them rather than how they appear in real life. This allows him to capture the energy of a place and share it with others. In addition, he often includes details in his paintings so that everywhere you look, there is something new to discover.
His remarkable use of color, light, and texture makes each piece captivating and truly one-of-a-kind. From desert sands to rolling hillsides, Blackburn invites viewers to journey through his art and explore the beauty of nature.
His book “HOW. Life Navigation for People Who Think” outlines Blackburn’s creative process. This process applies to any project in any medium on any scale.
When creating a painting, Blackburn begins with an idea and transitions through a series of steps to bring it into existence. During the painting process, he often flips the painting upside down and sideways – and uses a mirror to find all the unique geological features and relationships that go for miles and miles back into the horizon and down into the individual rocks themselves. Next, he applies multiple glazes so that the viewer can look into the rock or other surfaces, thus revealing all the hidden colors as if the object was wet. It takes him hundreds of hours to complete a painting, with one of his most recent works, “Two Hawks,” taking over 1600 hours to create.
