Expressive Impressionism: The Paintings of Vigdis Elisabeth Feldt
Vigdis Elisabeth Feldt is an artist whose painting style can be described as expressive impressionism. Her works capture the effect of color and light through naturalistic and surrealistic landscapes that tell stories from her imagination. Her paintings are beautiful and serve as metaphors for the beauty of creation.
Vigdis Elisabeth Feldt has always had a passion for art and drawing. Her love of art was further ignited after a trip to Asia by boat, where she met Mrs. Hanalore Lengauer. Mrs. Lengauer invited Vigdis to join the Liberate Art Academy, an academy run by Architect Ronald Lenganger, painter and museum intendant, and Kjell Phar Iversen, famous Neo-Impressionist. Vigdis spent seven years as an artist in residence at the academy, receiving corrections from professional teachers and attending additional courses. This experience, combined with her studies at Bergen University, Stavanger, led Vigdis to understand the power of art to shape cultures from the stone ages until the present day.
Vigdis Elisabeth Feldt is inspired by the everyday interactions between humans and their environment. She finds beauty in the small moments that often go unnoticed. She also profoundly appreciates how colors blend to create vibrant hues and how shadows can bring out new perspectives on familiar sights. This appreciation for the beauty of nature and humanity is a significant inspiration for her work. Additionally, she finds inspiration in her dreams and imagination. She sees her paintings as stories and uses them as an outlet to express her thoughts and feelings. Finally, she draws on her experiences, using them as metaphors to explore ideas within her artwork.
Her works reflect the importance of light and its effects on her works. She often paints with light and color references, capturing the ethereal beauty of a scene. Water transparency, in particular, plays a vital role in her works. Light playing with the surfaces of materials, sunbeams penetrating leaves and flowers, and sunlight touching the skin – are all common features in her paintings. By combining light, shape, and color elements, she strives to tell a story in each of her works.
Vigdis Elisabeth Feldt begins her creative process in the morning by sitting down and sketching what comes to her mind. Next, she picks a canvas of sizes between 80 and 100 cm and divides the canvas surface according to the Golden ratio principle. After marking the center of the canvas, she chooses the foreground, middle ground, and background levels and marks important icons in a triangular indicating process. She then uses a non-sticky crayon or pencil to set up human, and animal figures, town or countryside landscapes, and interiors.
The painting process starts with two oil colors, followed by one color after the other. After three hours of work, she finishes the day and returns to the unfinished work the next day. This process is repeated until she thinks the piece is finished. Her paintings are full of expressionism, impressionism, naturalism, and surrealism, telling stories from imagination and landscapes she has seen. These analogies are used to express the beauty of creation.
